Principal Software Engineers are members of the Development Team who have learned how to apply practical solutions to difficult problems through real-world experience. They also have the ability to navigate the social challenges of working within a development team and use their skills to solidify and strengthen the group they work with.


  • Serving as a mentor and role model for junior members of the team
  • Guiding practical, iterative, and achievable solutions to challenging problems
  • Solidifying the team by identifying when others are struggling and giving the right help
  • Continually elevating the technical intelligence of the team
  • Improving the accuracy of estimation through expertise and experience
  • Building shippable product increments that meet the goals set by the Product Owner
  • Collaboratively defining the product architecture with other members of the team
  • Operating and maintaining products in accordance with their SLOs
  • Understanding and internalizing our customers' perspectives


  • Is consistent and predictable, yet willing to take some chances based on instinct
  • Proactively helps junior members of the team, especially when they are struggling
  • Uses a combination of data and experience to back opinions
  • Eagerly learns new skills and techniques, bringing their learnings back to team
  • Seeks to understand the business drivers behind decisions
  • Is well-respected, trusted, and a positive agent of culture within the team

Job Qualifications:

  • Strong experience in a modern programming language
  • Working knowledge of Linux system administration and public cloud providers
  • Experience building and operating RESTful web services
  • Experience in NodeJS, Go, and Java (or the ability and desire to learn)
  • Experience configuring, administering, and scaling web applications and services
  • Extra credit for open source contributions and/or Drupal experience
