Where you fit:

Accela provides cutting edge technology for government agencies to engage and serve their citizens.  The cornerstone of our technology is the Civic Cloud platform that allows an entire ecosystem development and business partners to create endless number of solutions to serve the government and the public.  We are currently seeking a Director of Database Engineering to focus leading and building our current and future database administration team into a modern scalable SaaS team. The key to being successful in this position is having both the strong leadership and organizational ability combined with deep technical experience and skills. This person will help lead the company strategy around our hosting and database services.

Impact you will make in the role:

  • Lead company strategy around database engineering and hosting solutions for our company as we move our customers to a SaaS environment
  • Lead a growing DBA team which supports thousands of production databases through automation, proactive monitoring and 99.99% uptime
  • Define and Manage Database landscape, budgets, security compliance and operational efficiencies 
  • Design and implement the data strategy for future needs of big data platform and analytics, ML and AI.
  • Manage SQL Server databases through multiple product lifecycle environments, from development to mission-critical production systems
  • Oversee and maintain database servers and processes, including proactive monitoring of system health and performance, to ensure high levels of performance, availability, and security
  • Monitor multiple SQL Server instances for performance related issues
  • Solve problems for enterprise level applications
  • Implement backup, archival, recovery and active monitoring strategies.
  • Implement DB backups, restores, recovery models, database shrink operations, DBCC commands etc.
  • Implement and support SQL Server High Availability Groups
  • Patch OS and DB as needed with critical updates
  • Review SQL Server Error logs and Windows Logs to identify issues
  • Implement migration strategy from on-prem to SaaS, one data base to another data base vendors and big data platform.
  • Hire, retain the talent and ensure employee productivity through automation, tools and efficient process.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance and support release deployment activities after hours.
  • Manage the team and offer 24x7 support for critical production systems with 99.99% SLA

Expertise you will bring in:

  • 10+ years ongoing experience with SQL Server Database Enterprise Edition; strong understanding of SQL Server (2008-2016)
  • SaaS experience is required
  • Proven experience identifying and hiring the right talent
  • Proven experience managing and developing a database team
  • Experience supporting multiple production database engines: Oracle, MYSQL, Postgress, etc
  • Experience automating data load/unload, export and import operations
  • Experience supporting production BigData solutions: Vertica, GreenPlum, Hadoop, etc.
  • Knowledge of database backup and recovery solutions
  • Understanding of how to build high performance SQL Server systems
  • Experience with SQL Performance Tuning and SQL Script Development
  • Experience with Performance Tuning and Optimization (PTO), using native monitoring and troubleshooting tools
  • Proficient knowledge of reporting and tools PowerBI, Crystal, SSRS, SSAS, SSIS, etc
  • Ability to quickly comprehend ERDs with structured and unstructured data
  • Ability to effectively communicate with and professionally work with clients in a fast-paced, customer focused environment
  • Experience working closely and training development teams on modern data architecture & query best practices
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field
